Can I book a flight for a baby travelling on the mother's lap through your flight booking API?
Yes, in most cases you can add an infant travelling on an adult's lap when you book through the flight booking API. You tell the system at search time that one of the travellers is an infant, and the search comes back with the fare and any taxes the airline charges for that infant, so you can quote your customer properly before you take any money.
The important part is the date of birth. The airline works out whether the child counts as an infant based on the travel date, not the date you make the booking. So if your customer's baby will pass the infant age limit before the return flight, the airline may ask for a separate seat for that leg, and the system will normally show that when you search with the correct date of birth. Most airlines also expect every infant to travel with an accompanying adult and limit how many infants one adult can carry, and those rules come from the airline rather than from us.
We do have to be honest about the limits. Not every airline and not every supplier returns infant pricing through the API in the same way. With some carriers, especially certain budget airlines, the infant has to be added through the airline or through a manual request after the main booking is made. Which of your suppliers support it in the search depends on the content connected to your account.
Before you start selling family travel, ask us to run a test search with an infant on the routes you sell most, and always check the fare rules shown for infants on screen before you take payment from your customer.
