Yes, in most cases you can search around a point on the map or around a known landmark, although how well it works depends on the supplier sitting behind each search.

Most hotel booking APIs let you search in more than one way. You can pass a city, you can pass a set of map coordinates together with a distance around them, or you can pass a specific hotel reference if you already know the exact property your customer has in mind. Searching by coordinates is the one that helps with airports and landmarks, because you give the point and the radius and you get back the properties that sit inside it. Airports tend to be the easiest of all, since an airport code is widely recognised and simple to turn into a point on the map.

Landmarks are less consistent. Some suppliers keep their own list of points of interest, such as a railway station, a beach or an exhibition centre, and those come through neatly in the results. Others hold only the city and the street address, so a search for a stadium or a market has to be built from coordinates at your end rather than from a ready made list. Distance is also often measured in a straight line rather than by road, so a hotel that looks very close can still be a long drive away, and that is worth explaining to your customer before they book.

If this matters to the way you sell, pick the two or three areas you work with most, try them in your test account, and check which search options your plan actually includes before you promise a map based search to your customers.

Saved.
